lecture #6 prokaryotic cells Flashcards
size of prokaryotic cells
1 - 10 um
what does a prokaryotic cell contain
DNA (free in cytoplasme), ribosomes, cell wall, outer capsule
in domain bacteria, what is the cell wall composed of
peptidoglycan = protein + Carb
(not cellulose, like in plant cells)!!!
how is the cell wall , what is it used for
very strong, resists bursting - maintains shape
what is a Gram-positive cell wall (domain bacteria)
thick peptidoglycan (many layers), plasma membrane
what is a Gram-negative cell wall (domain bacteria)
outer membrane, and thin peptinoglycan, plasma membrane
why is it necessary to know if a bacteria is gram negative or positive?
to check which one causes an infection, and then administore the right treatment
which is harder to kill ? ( Graham - or + )
Graham - , because extra layer gives more protection
why do some prokaryotes produce a capsule?
- protects them from drying
- helps the cells adhere to things
- protects the cell from destruction by white blood cells
what do domain Archae have associated with their DNA
histones (proteins) (like eukaryotes)
what is different with domain archae cell wall compared to domain
bacteria cell walls
they do not have peptidoglycan in their cell wall
