lecture #7 plant cells Flashcards
what do some eukaryotic cells have to pump water out to make sure the cytoplastic concentration is maintained?
- contractile vacuole (found in protists)
what do plant cells have/not have that animal cells do
have:
- cell wall /central vacuole/chloroplats
doesn‘t have
centrioles
what is the cell wall made of?
- cellulose
what is the function of the cell wall
- supports the cell and ultimitely the plant (to make in hold up right)
- helps prevent water loss
what are plasmodesmata
pores in cell wall
- pores permit movement of fluids between cells (water and small solutes can pass freely)
what are the pores in cell wall called
plasmodesmata
do animal cells have a CENTRAL vacuole?
they do not have a central vacuole, but they have many small vacuoles . some protists have contractile vacuole to get rid of ecess water
what is the function of the central vacuole
- supports cell and the plant
- site of storage (proteins, inorganic ions, pigments, defensive compounds ex. come plants produce chemicals that stop them from bring eaten.
- disposing of metabolic waste (or else would endager cell if accumulated in cytoplasm)
characteristic central vacuoles
- 90% plant cell volume
- helps maintain turgor (absorbtion of fluid content)
what are chloroplasts
site of photosynthesis
where are chloroplasts found
green part of the plant
what do chloroplasts contain
chlorophyll
can plants do cellular respiration
plants can do photosunthesis and cellular respiration
what are the energy converting organelles
mitochondria: food —- to ATP
chloroplast : solar energy —– food
what does the mitochondria need to make atm
0^2 (waste CO2)
