lecture #2 Flashcards
what is organelles
different structures within cells with specialized functions
what is the nucleus
control center, contains DNA
what is the golgi (organelle)
packaging and transport center
what is the mitochondria
produces energy for the cell
what are the 2 big categories of cells
- Prokaryotic cell
- Eukaryotic cell
What caracterises a prokaryotic cell
- DNA is not seperated from cytoplasm in a nucleus (no nucleus)
ex. bacteria
What caracterises a Eukaryotic cell
- DNA IS seperated from cytoplasme in a nucleus
ex. plants, animals
What is a physical difference between eukaryotic cell and prokaryotic cell
eukaryotic cell is bigger and contains a nucleus
What is Darwin’s theory
The environment selects the best adapted organisms for survival (natural selection acts on variable traits within a population)
what is descent with modification
All species descended from an ancestoe with each generation having the possibility to be modified (change in genetic make-up of a population)
What comes with diversity of life?
Unity: especially at lower levels of organisations
example: the universal genetic language of DNA unites prokaryotes and eukaryotes
what is behind decent with modification
natural selection
