lecture #4 Flashcards
1
Q
what do living things contain
A
nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids
2
Q
what is an organic compound?
A
contains Carbon
(long chains of carbon atoms can combined with many other atoms)
3
Q
what do properties of an organic molecule depend on
A
- arrangement of carbon skeleton (straight, branched or rings, long or short bonds)
- the functional groups: molecular components attached to that carbon skeleton (gives molecules distinctive chemical properties)
4
Q
what is a monomer
A
a single unit, one piece
5
Q
what is a polymer
A
a chain or ring of monomers
6
Q
How are polymers built?
A
dehydrations synthesis or condensation reaction
dehydration removes a water molecule, forming a new bond. A bond forms, water is released
7
Q
how are polymers broken down
A
Hydrolosis: water molecule is added, a bond is broken
8
Q
what are the 4 main classes of biological molecules
A
- carbohydartes
- lipids
- proteins
- nucleic acids
