Lecture 6-the Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus
Change in the environment
Something in your surrounding that causes the receptor to detect
What does CNS stand for
Central nervous system
Homeostasis
Internal conditions consistent
If it’s a stimulus - eg something in your surrounding caused your receptor to detect
What is the order of the action
From the stimulus - receptor - sensory -relay neurone - motor neurone - effector - response
What is myelin sheath
Protects the impulse
What happens if myelin sheath is damaged
The electrical impulse may escape and cause the muscle to twitch or affect the muscle
What is the formula for speed
Distance / time
What does the motor neurone have
It has a myelin sheath
What does sensory neurone have
It has Schwann cell
STORM
S- sensory neurone
AND O don’t stand for anything
R- relay neurone
M- motor neurone
Shows a bee flying towards a man’s eye
The stimulus is the bee
The receptor picks up that the bee is coming towards the eye
Then a sensory neurone sends a message towards the relay neurone and that makes a decision and then sends a message to the motor neurone and that makes the person shut the eye
Describe the simple reflex pathway for the withdrawal of a hand from a hot surface
So the stimulus is the hot surface
The receptor is the skin from thermal heat receptors
So the sensory neurone in the hand detects the heat from the hot surface which the receptor picks up on this message is then sent to the relay neurone which then causes the hand to be snatched
It bypasses the brain
Describe the simple reflex response of a bee sting on a persons finger
The stimulus is the the sting of the bee
The receptor picks up the stings on ur hand which sends a message to the sensory neurone which then sends a message to the relay neurone and then sends it the motor neurone
What is the space between the two neurones called
Synapse
