Lecture 6 - Innate Immunity Flashcards
Functions of immune system?
Protect against infection, recover from infection and tissue damage, maintain adequate relationship with environment
Biophysical defence factors?
mucus, cilia lining, stomach acid, skin, lysozymes, gland secretions, commensal organisms, spermine
Functions of lymphatic system?
drains leaked fluid from vessels, detects shape changes to alert of a blockage somewhere
Cells of the blood and function?
Erythrocytes (O2 and CO2 transport), platelet (clotting factor), neutrophils (phagocytosis, anti-bacteria), basophil (mucosal surface protection), eosinophil (anti-parasite immunity), monocyte (phagocytosis, antigen presentation), lymphocyte (adaptive immunity)
Haematopoeisis?
Stem cells differentiate directly into different cell types (incl. RBC, monocytes develop into macrophages in tissue), megakaryocytes which develop into platelets or lymphocytes (into B and T)
Primary lymphoid organs?
Thymus, thoracic duct, bone marrow, lymphatic vessels
Secondary lymphoid organs?
Adenoids, tonsils, spleen, payer’s patches, appendix, lymph nodes
