Lecture 6: Cells and Tissues cont. Flashcards
Organelles
Parts of cell that perform functions
Cytosol
Liquid portion of cell
Microfilaments
Inner framework
Intermediate filaments
Stabilize position of organelles
Microtubules
Help w/cell division, move vesicles
Centrioles
2, involved with cell division
Cilia and flagella
Made up of micro tubules and allow for movement
rRNA
Involved with protein synthesis
Rough ER
Has ribosomes, protein synthesis
Smooth ER
No ribosomes, makes steroids and fatty acids
Golgi apparatus
Receives, sorts and ships proteins
Membrane vesicles
Insert things into membrane
Transport vesicles
Move things around cell
Lysosomes
Very acidic inside, have enzymes. Carry out intracellular digestion.
Oxidase
Oxidation of amino acids and fatty acids (removal of H+)
Catalase
Breaks down h2o2
Mitochondria
Where ATP is made. Powerhouse of cell.
Cristae
Folds (mitochondria), increase surface area=allow more ATP production
Nucleus
Where DNA is located
Nuclear envelope
Encases chromatin
Nuclear pores
Allow things in and out (small molecules and ions)
Nucleolus
Where ribosomes are made. Dense structure at center of nucleus.
Desmosomes (anchoring junction)
Connects cells that are similar
Gap junctions
Connects cytoplasm of two cells and allows passage of molecules
Tight junctions
Prevent anything from leaking or passing between cells
