Lecture 17: Nervous System Flashcards
Thalamus
Relay center for sensory signals between SC, lower brain, and cerebrum.
Cerebellum
1/2 of all neurons in brain. Integration area. Regulates posture and balance, coordination of movements.
Hypothalamus
1) controls ANS
2) produces hormones
3) regulates emotional/behavioral patterns
4) regulates eating/drinking
5) controls temp
6) regulates circadian rhythms
Epithalamus
Pineal gland: melatonin
Melatonin: regulates circadian rhythms
Cerebral cortex
Gray matter. No myelin. Cell bodies
Fissures
Deep depressions
Gyri
Folds that increase surface area. Increase processing ability.
Sulci
Depressions or grooves
Longitudinal fissures
Separates right and left halves
Corpus callosum
White matter that connects hemispheres
Cerebral white matter (tracts)
Association: connect gyri in same hemisphere
Commisural: connect gyri in opposite hemispheres
Projection: connect cerebrum to lower CNS
Basal ganglia/nuclei
Memory
Attention
Emotional behaviors/anxiety
(Groups of cell bodies)
Limbic system
Pain Pleasure Affection Anger Smell Memory
Spinal cord external anatomy
16-18". Stops at L2. Cauda equina: nerve roots Roots: 31 pairs Dorsal: posterior. Ganglion. Ventral: anterior. Rounded.
Internal anatomy
Gray commisure: connects L and R sides of SC
Anterior white commisure: connects L and R
