Lecture 15: Muscular And Nervous System Flashcards
Twitch contraction
One motor unit contracting and relaxing
Motor units
Neuron and all the muscle fibers it contacts. Staggered to vary recruitment and in case of damage. 1-2000 units based on task.
Wave summation
Fiber doesn’t completely relax before the next stimulus and subsequent contractions are stronger
Fused tetanus
Stimuli are coming so fast there’s sustained contraction
Flaccid muscle tone
Lack of tone, no contraction (possibly due to neuron damage)
Isotonic contraction
Movement changing angle in joint
Eccentric
Increasing joint angle
Concentric
Decreasing joint angle
Isometric
Tension in muscle with no change in length
Muscle regeneration
Satellite cells fuse with muscle fiber (small tears). Large scale damage to fibers is converted to scar tissue (fibrosis).
Disuse atrophy
Muscle shrinks
Denervation atrophy
No nervous stimulation (spinal cord injury)
Brain
100 billion neurons
Spinal cord
100 million neurons
Cranial nerves
12 pairs
