Lecture 4: Basic Chemistry cont. Flashcards
Peptide bond
Joins two amino acids and removes water (dehydration synthesis).
Amino acids
Are a monomer (unit) of protein. 20 varieties.
Denaturation
Changes protein structure.
Primary structure
Is the sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain.
Secondary structure
Reinforced by hydrogen bonds
Alpha helix
Spiral
Beta-pleated sheet
Accordion
Tertiary structure
Overall 3D shape, reinforced by chemical bonds between R groups. Creates functional proteins.
Quaternary structure
Multiple units create functional proteins
(Enzyme) catalyst
Changes the rate of a reaction
(Enzyme) substrate
Molecules that binds to the enzyme
(Enzyme) active site
Where substrate binds to the enzyme
DNA
Genetic material found in cell nucleus. A, G, T, C.
RNA
Located outside nucleus, carries out orders for protein synthesis issued by DNA. A, G, C, U (uracil).
Adenosine triphosphate
Energy molecule in the body. Glucose is used in order to make ATP. 3 phosphates. ATP+h2o~ADP+P (energy is released).
