Lecture 5B, part 3 Flashcards
What do targets of purposive sampling often have?
A particular characteristic directly related to the research question
Purpose of purposive sampling
Often used to evaluate programs or when testing a questionnaire
Definition of quota sampling
Method used to include an array of subject characteristics in predefined proportions (type of purposive sampling)
How is quota sampling done?
Data are collected from persons having the desired characteristics/select pop based on quotas of background info
What is snowball sampling?
Peer-referral sampling, used for hard to reach pops
How does snowball sampling work?
Selection of initial seeds drives recruitment process
May involve incentives for referrals
How does respondent-driven sampling work?
Similar to snowball sampling, but…
Seeds given coupons to recruit additional participants from within their social network
Can be used to approximate networks/mathematical modeling used to weight the sample to compensate for non-random data collection
What law was passed in 1956 have to do with surveys? What was the purpose?
National Health Survey Act provided legislative authorization for a continuing survey to provide current statistical data on the amount, distribution, and effects of illness and disability in the U.S.
What conducts surveys and manages data collection systems?
National Center for Health Statistics
Source of National Survey of Family Growth
CDC/NCHS
Purpose of National Survey of Family Growth
Gathers info on family life, marriage and divorce, pregnancy, infertility, use of contraception, and men’s and women’s health
Timeframe of National Survey of Family Growth
Cycles 1-5 surveys of women (1973-1995), cycle 6 (2002) 2006-2010 and 2011-2015
Sample in National Survey of Family Growth
Men and women aged 14-44 living in HH in the U.S., approximately 5,000 interviews conducted each yr
Sampling method of National Survey of Family Growth
Multi-stage national area probability sample design
Data collection method of National Survey of Family Growth
In-person interviews by trained female interviewers, conducted in respondents’ homes (using computer-assisted personal interviewing)
Source of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
CDC/NCHS
Purpose of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the U.S.
Timeframe of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Began in early 1960s, conducted as a series of surveys
Sample of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Nationally representative of about 5,000 persons each year
Sampling method of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Multi-stage cluster sampling
Data collection method of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Combines interviews and physical examinations (most in-depth and logically complex survey conducted by NCHS)
Interview component measures of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Demographic, socioeconomic, dietary, health-related outcomes and behaviors
Exam component measures of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Medical, dental, and physiological measurements, lab tests
Source of Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
Partnership between CDC/NCCDPHP and State HDs
Purpose of Behavioral RF Surveillance System
Collect state-level data about U.S. residents regarding health-related risk behavior, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services
