Lecture 3 Flashcards
what is Declarative knowledge:
“knowing that”
– Knowledge about types of people and social
situations
what is Procedural knowledge:
“knowing how”
– Rules, skills, and habits for thinking and acting
what is Schema
under declarative knowledge,
a knowledge structure consisting of any organized body of stored information”
How is Declarative Knowledge represented and what effects does it have?
Associative networks
• Network of nodes and links
• if a link is repeatedly observed, the link gains in strength
what is the problem with schemas
We go beyond the information available by filling in gaps based on our schemas
One of the functions of schemas, which may sometimes create inaccuracy
give Examples of procedural knowledge
testing hypotheses • coping strategies • problem solving • social skills • evaluating persuasive messages • causal attribution • strategies for goal pursuit
what is TOTE unit: Test- Operate-Test-Exit
If I have not reached my goal, then keep trying
• If I have reached my goal, then exit the system and do something else
what are the Effects of social knowledge
Attention [which will be covered in a future class]
• Construal
• Memory
People actually recall more…
when forming an impression than when trying to remember
• In the impression-formation condition, information was linked to their schemas, and so remembered better
