lecture 3 Flashcards
What is needed in order for an egg to be fertilized?
- ovulation
- 23 chromoomes from each parent
What are the 3 main risks for infertility?
health: underweight, hormonal health, uterin or sperm health
lifestyle: exposure to radiation chemicals or smocking or drinking
age: fertility goes down in mid 30s
Fertility treatments and other options
3
Asisted reproductive technology ( ART)
- IVF (in vitro fertilization): When an egg is fertilized outside of the uterous then this embryo is returned to a uterous.
- IUI (Intrauterine insemination)): Sperm is injected into uterous
Adoption
What are the 5 main types of contraception
Hormonal methode:
pill (1950)
- prevents ovulation
- thins vaginal mucus
- thins uterin lining
- Has side effects
Intrauterine devices (1800)
- iuds
Bariar methode
Surgical
- visectomy
- tube ligation
Plan B
must be used with 72 h
- fast version of the pill
Abortion in canada.
When was it legal? When was it illigal? When can it be preformed? HOw?
legal: 1988 and up

Explain the proccess of fertilization
- ovulation: egg enters fallopian tube
- Fertilization 24 h after ovulation (stilll at beging of fulopian tube
- 24-30h after fertlization sperm amd egg chromosomal material unite
- egg devides
- 36 h after fertilization there are 2 cells
- 48h 4 cells
- day 4: hollow ball 100 cells
- day 5 zygot enters uterus
- day 12- 14 blastocyst implanted to wall
What is a zygot
zygote is a single-celled organism resulting from a fertilized egg.
It exsists only in the first couple days after firtilization
in fallopian tube
What is a blastocyst
Blastocyst is a zygot embeded into uterine lining.
A placenta forms around it.
This step is called implantation which takes about a week
Germinal stage
1st and second week
zygot and blastocyst
What happens in week 3 to 8
The embryonic stage!
embyo is embeded into uterus
cell layers form
theres the endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm
week 3 circulatory system forms-heart starts beating
week 4 neural tube
The three germ layers are the endoderm, the ectoderm, and the mesoderm. What do each of these layers form?
The ectoderm gives rise to the skin and the nervous system.
The mesoderm specifies the development of several cell types such as bone, muscle, and connective tissue.
Cells in the endoderm layer become the linings of the digestive and respiratory system, and form organs such as the liver and pancreas.
Week 3-8
Embryonic stage!
Each day a diffrent body part begans to form after week 8 the blueprints are there
week 9-38
fetal stage!
parent can feel child
month 6 hearing
7 sight
9 fat deposit
brain is always developing
earliest viable is 22 weeks
first trimester
1- 12 weeks
morning sickness
hormon flux
high risk for miscarage 1/10
less emotional conection
Second trimester
showing
quickening (feel baby moving around)
find out sex between 16-20 weeks
