Autonomy-supportive feedback in sport (Carpentier & mageau, 2013)

A
  • 340 athletes, 58 coaches
  • Empathic, offers choice for solution, based on clear reachable goals, directed at behaviour, includes suggestions, friendly tone
  • Increases in = competence, autonomy, relatedness, self-esteem, wellbeing, performance
  • Decreases in = negative affect, a-motivation

(CBAS)

A

Reactive behaviour = when athlete shows certain behaviour & coach responds
- Desired behaviour = reinforcement, no reinforcement
- Errors/mistakes = support, positive instruction, punishment, negative instruction, no response
Spontaneous behaviour = other instructions, convos with athletes, not just reacting to something
= game-related, organisation

  • ‘Positive coaching -> positive outcome’ = enjoyment, wellbeing
  • ‘Negative coaching is infrequent but have strong -ve impact’
  • After tallying up scores for each section, can see if coaching is overall positive or not
