Lecture 21: The Somatosensory System 2 (slide 16+) Flashcards
whats the scientific term for whiskers?
mystical vibrissae
what do barrel fields look like when they are stained?
darker colour
what are barrel fields separated by ?
lighter areas called septa
what’s involved in the primary somatosensory pathway from whisker to cortex?
the mystical vibrissae are used and the sensory neurone and trigminal nerve send a signal to the principal trigeminal nucleus, which travels to the ventral posterior medial nucleus of thalamus and on to the somatosensory barrel cortex.
label the vibrissal follicle, Top, middle, end bulb?
Top- hair shaft, epidermis, sebaceous gland, papillary dermis
medium- dermal sheath
end bulb - hair matrix, germinative epithelium, dermal papilla
what does the somatosensory cortex do?
receives all sensory input from the body
what is Somatotopy?
The mapping of the body’s surface sensations
onto a structure in the brain
what is the Sensory
Homunculus?
A map of your body in your Brain
where is the map of the Boyd for the brain kept?
in the sensory strip
