Lecture 21 - Oxygen Administration Flashcards
Oxygen Therapy
What are the goals of oxygen therapy
What are the causes of hypoxemia
Compare oxyhemoglobin saturation with oxygen partial pressure in terms of hypoxemia
What are the indications for oxygen therapy (5)
What measurements of oxygenation are used during physiotherapy
Explain CO2 retention (oxygen induced hypercapnia and how oxygen therapy can cause it
Describe oxygen toxicity
Describe absorption atelectasis
What are 4 other hazards of oxygen therapy
What are the main components of an oxygen delivery system
Watch video in slides
Compare fixed vs variable-performance oxygen delivery systems
Describe nasal prongs and if they are fixed or variable
Variable
NOTE: Watch video in slides
Describe a simple face mask and if it is fixed or variable
Variable
NOTE: Watch video
Describe partial and non-rebreather masks and if they are fixed or varibale
Variable
NOTE: Watch video
Describe a venturi mask and if they are fixed or variable
What are 2 other types of fixed variable devices
What are other types of oxygen delivery systems/devices (3)
No, we do change it for suctioning (touch alarms and deliver 100%) but we don’t adjust the actual settings (eg. Baseline, peep, mode of ventilation) we always bring it back to those settings
What are some important tips for physiotherapists in terms of oxygen therapy
Which controlled acts can physiotherapists in Ontario perform
What is the physio’s role in authority and responsibility (controlled act)
What is physio’s role in education and training (controlled act)
What is physios role in managing adverse outcomes
What is the physiotherapists roles in communication with other health care providers AND rosters for controlled acts
Can a physiotherapist delegate according to the controlled act?
Yes you can as long as your CI is rostered and you need to have appropriate level of supervision
