stress
- physiological/emotional response when a situation overwhelms out ability to cope
stress and stressors
- stressor: event which proposed threat to psychological functioning
- appraisal: cognitive evaluation and interpretation
- response: the cognitive, emotional and biological reactions
role of appraisals
- primary: person desides if the situation is benign, stressful or irrelevant
- secondary: person evaluated options and decides how to respond
physiological stress response
- sympathetic: on (dilation of eyes)
- parasympathetic: off
general adaptation syndrome
3 phases
1. alarm - activation of amygdala and release of adrenaline and nor adrenaline
2. resistance - rational though and parasympathetic tries to settle things
3. exhaustion - burnout, extended periods of stress, can no longer resist stress
impact of stress on health
- increase CVD risk
- slower wound healing
- High bp, pooer immune function
- increase in poor health behaviour
perseverative cognition
repetitive activation of cognitive representation of psychological stressors leading to chronic activation of physiological response
1. anticipatory: worry and what if
2. retrospective: rumination
burnout (healthcare context)
state vital exhaustion, emotional and physical
- perceived lack of accomplishment
- depersonalisation of others (cynicism and lack of compassion)
- emotional exhauston
