what is pragmatics and what are some types?
study of the intended, not literal meaning
types include metaphors, irony, idioms, sarcasm
explain the standard pragmatic model
1 stage= go through the literal meaning first
2= decide if the literal meaning makes sense or matches with context
3- if literal meaning is inadequate we will search nonliteral meanings
so this model predicts metaphorical meaning is accessed very slowly compared to literal meanings
explain the prediction model
1 stage= latent sematic analysis, this represents the meaning o words based on relations with other words
2= construction integration= when you use information from the first stage to construct interpretation
what is common ground?
adopting the position of speakers perspective to understand what they are saying. shared knowledge between speaker and listerner
again this is very attentionally demanding
