LECTURE 10- INFERENCES Flashcards

1
Q

what are the 3 types of inferences

A
  1. logical- depends on the meaning of words, what do the words tell us basically
  2. bridging- establish coherence between current part of text and preceding text- bridge the 2 sentences together.
  3. Elaborative- embellish, or add details to text using knowledge to expand information (mistakes can occur)

Q

how do we infer?

A

using contextual information and prior knowledge

this uses 2 stages

1bonding= automatic activation of words from precending sentences
2. resolution= ensures interpretations are consistent with contextual information that is presented to us

Q

strengths and weaknesses to schema theory

A

Schema theory strengths- schematic knowledge helps with text comprehension and general understanding. Accounts for errors and distortions

Weaknesses- suggests we make more errors than we do. Schema theories are hard to test. when and how schemas are used is very unclear.
