Lecture 1 - Introduction Flashcards
What are the two sizes of anatomy?
Microscopic (Histology) and Gross
Name from smallest to biggest the structural organization of the human body
- > Atoms
- > Molecules
- > Organelles
- > Cells
- > Tissues
- > Organs
- > Organ Systems
- > Organism
Describe anatomical position
- > Standing upright
- > Feet parallel and on the floor
- > Arms at sides of body palms facing outward and thumbs pointing away from the body
- > Directions used in reference to patient
What are the three anatomic planes?
- > Coronal (Front/Back)
- > Transverse (Upper/Lower)
- > Midsagittal (Left/Right)
Whats the difference between midsagittal vs sagittal?
Midsagittal is exactly on the midline/ middle of the body and divides the body in two equal halves while sagittal splits the body into two non-equal halves
What are the four Anatomical directional terms and what do they mean?
- > Anterior or Ventral (front)
- > Posterior or Dorsal (back)
- > Superior (higher)
- > Inferior (lower)
- > Medial (closer to midline)
- > Lateral (further away from midline)
- > Proximal (portion of limb closer to the trunk)
- > Distal (portion of limb further away from body)
Axial vs Appendicular skeleton
Axial - > head, neck, and trunk (vertical axis of the body)
Appendicular - > appendages, upper and lower limbs
What makes up the thoracic cavity
- > Mediastinum
- > Plural Cavity
- > Pericardial cavity
What makes up the dorsal body cavity?
- > Cranial Cavity
- > Vertebral Column
What makes up the Abdominopelvic Cavity?
- > Abdominal Cavity
- > Pelvic Cavity
What makes up the Ventral cavity
- > Thoracic Cavity
- > Abdominopelvic Cavity
What are the two layers of ventral cavity membranes and briefly explain each
Parietal - > Lines the internal surfaces of the body wall
Visceral - > Covers the external surfaces of organs of the cavity
*Both produce small amounts of lubricating fluid *
Which two cavities have no physical separation
The abdominal cavity (superior) and the pelvic cavity (inferior)
What is the membrane of the abdominopelvic cavity called?
peritoneum
In which cavity is the heart located?
In the medial pericardial cavity, which sits in the mediastinum
