Lecture 1: Cell Principles Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the three common structures and functions of all cells?
- plama membrane
- nucleus
- cytosol
What is the function of the Plasma Membrane?
it separates the inside and outside of the cell (acts os a barrier)
What is the plasma membrane made of?
made of a phospholipid bilayer and proteins that lets molecules and others in and out of the cell
What is the function of the nucleus?
it carries DNA which is Deoxyribonucleic acid
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
- its a network filled with a membraneous system
Why is the Endoplasmic reticulum folded?
its folded for an increased surface are to make proteins!!
What are the two types Endoplasmic reticulum?
- rough
- smooth
What are functions of the rough of the endoplasmic reticulum?
- DNA is transcribed to mRNA which is then translated on the ribosomes
What are functions of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum
- lipid producing system
- creates products for transport vehicles which move to golgi complex
What does the Golgi Complex do?
Proteins will go into the golgi, which will then be sorted and transport the proteins to where they need to go
What do lysosomes do?
they use hydrolytic enzymes to breakdown complex molecules (uses water to do so)
What do peroxisomes do?
they oxidative enzymes to speed up oxidation reactions
whats the most common place to find peroxisomes?
liver cells
What do centrioles do?
they organize microtubules and form cilia and flagella
What does the mitochondria do?
- it makes ATP
