Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is the grey matter of the brain made of and what is it’s quality?
Made from cell bodies and it is not easily generated when it’s damaged.
What is the whitematter of the brain made of and what is it’s quality?
Made from myelinated axons it is easily generated also myelinated axons connect the brain regions and help with the communication in between.
What are the parts of Limbic system and what’s their duty?
1-Hypothalamus: controls homeostasis
2- Thalamus: relays information
3-Amygdala: emotion
4-Hippocampus: memory conversion
How did Phineas Gage case helped scientists to figure out the brain?
By analyzing his brain scientists realized that different parts of the brain have different functions. His recovery was faster than expected because his white matter was damaged rather than his grey matter.
What could be the potential locations of brain lesions?
Localization: when the brain lesion occurs on one area.
Lateralization: Damage was on a certain side of the brain.
Distribution of functions: lost functions are sometimes rehabilitated. (other parts of the brain can compensate.
Hierarchical Organization: Sophistication of functions wether high or low brain region damaged.
what does forebrain include?
1- Telencephalon (cerebral hemispheres)
2- Diencephalon ( Includes thalamus, hypothalamus, subthalamus etc)
3-Complex cognitive functions, sensitive and motor activities
4-probably evolved last
what does midbrain include?
1-colliculi, tegmentum and cerebral peduncles.
2- Visioni hearing, motor functions, alertness and temperature regulation.
3-Probably evolved second
what does hindbrain include?
1-Spinal cord, brain stem, cerebellum
2-controls vital functions
3- evolved first
Hebbian Theory:
Neural pathways develop based on experiences. The more you use your pathways the stronger and faster the become.
Assumptions od Hebbian of Change theory?
1- Environment, culture, customs family history, etc. shape who we are.
2- Plasticity, flexibility, and adaptability are fundamental properties of the brain. If this didn’t exist therapy and recovery would be insignificant.
What is neuropsychological assesment?
-Combining tests according to the patients symptoms.
-May include Iq test etc.
What is Biopsychosocial model?
1- Social support network will influence the outcome
2- Patient’s understanding of well-being will influence the outcome
3- Mismatch between caregiver and the patient may add stress and challenge the recovery.
What is dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella terms for decline in cognitive function that will interrupt one’s life.
Symptoms of dementia?
Poor mood and perception
What is the job of a neuropsychologist?
Understanding how behaviors correlate to brain functions by using neurology and psychology.
They asses normal, impaired cognitive, social, physical and emotional functioning.
