Lec 22- Predation and herbivory avoidance Flashcards
EATING IS EXPLOITATION
Just remember
what are two major strategies to avoid going extinct due to predation?
- Defense: stay and don’t get eaten in the first place.
- Refuges: seek refuge from predators.
Aposematic strategy
dont eat me im not tasty. Bright and conspicuous coloration is displayed by many toxic of distasteful potential prey species.
Mullerian mimicry
mimicking of warning signals among different poisonous species.
bees, hornets, and wasps, all mimick each other’s looks- stripes. once stung they will likely never feed on this species
Batesian mimicry
why bother to be poisonous when you can simply look poisonous?
a type of mimicry by non toxic species to resemble toxic
camouflage
you can eat me if you cant see me
mostly a visual display
rescue effect
individuals from larger populations may immigrate and “rescue” smaller populations
What does size help with according to survival?
simply are too big to be eaten
but the cons are it takes too much energy to maintain large body size

Can plants avoid herbivory animals from eating them? explain how
thorns, poisonous budding etc
constitutive defences
produced continuously, regardless of what happens to the plant
Induced Defenses
concentrations of a defensive chemical increase rapidly in response to damage by
Digestion-reducing compounds
tea includes tannins which bind to plant proteins and make them difficult to digest for many herbivores
what do plants exhibit in response to herbivory?
phenotypic plasticity
Why don’t plants have warning coloration
-plants are generally green because of their chlorophyll
-color other than green= less light
-absorbed= less photosynthesis
how do fruits help with the dispersal of seeds?
eating them then pooping
Why are some fruits toxic
-they are not ripe yet
-to reduce the risk of the seeds being ingested (laxative properties, or constipation properties.)
