lec 10 Flashcards
where does immediate energy come from?
ATP-CrP
what does anaerobic mean?
without oxygen
what % can we break ATP, CP down to?
can only break down to 40%
what happens to anaerobic capacity as we grow
what age do we hit adult capacity?
it increases as children grow (18 around 100% adult capacity)
how do we measure anaerobic performance
wingate test
what is oxygen debt? who would have larger gap athletes or normal people
normal people would have a larger gap (look in lec 9
factors that may affect anaerobic performance in children and adolescence. what happens with them as we grow - increase or decrease?
muscle mass
maximal oxygen debt per unit muscle mass
rate of anaerobic glycolysis
neuromotor control
submaximal and maximal blood lactate levels -
submaximal and maximal muscle lactate levels
muscle mass - increases
maximal oxygen debt per unit muscle mass - increases
rate of anaerobic glycolysis - increases
neuromotor control - improves
submaximal and maximal blood lactate levels - increases
submaximal and maximal muscle lactate levels - increases
what happens to muscle mass as we grow?
increases
maximal oxygen debt per unit muscle mass as we grow?
increases
what happens to rate of anaerobic glycolysis as we grow?
increases
submaximal and maximal blood lactate levels as we grow?
increases
submaximal and maximal muscle lactate levels as we grow?
increases
what happens to blood pH at end of anaerobic or maximal aerobic exercise?
decreases
what happens to neuromotor control as we grow?
improves
what is muscle strength?
the amount of force produced in a single maximal contraction
what are some measures of strength?
static or isometric strength, explosive strength (power) and muscular endurance
what is isometric strength
force exerted without and changes in muscle length
eg. trying to lift a house
what is isotonic contraction
its what we are doing when we are lifting weights
what is explosive strength? example
ability for muscle to release max force/torque in shortest time possible
eg weight lifter
what is muscular endurance? eg
repeat or maintain muscular contractions over time
eg. doing 10 000 pushups
what happens with strength as we get older?
it increases we get stronger - until age 30 and then starts to decrease
does puberty play a role in strength increase?
yes
what do we know about resistance training in children?
resistance training does increase strength in prepubescent individuals but they do not develop muscle hypertrophy due to a lack of testosterone
what happens to anaerobic performance as we age?
performance declines
what is maintained better as we age muscular endurance or strength?
muscular endurance
100m sprint vs 10km run
what happens to peak power as we age?
declines
