lecture 7 - energy systems Flashcards
what is ATP?
- adenosine triosphate
- energy of the cell
what is ATP components
adenine connected to a ribose which connects to tri= 3 phosphate
what is ATP used for?
mechanical work - muscle contraction
chemical work - formation of proteins from amino acids
Transport work - maintenance of cellular ion concentration
3 energy systems for generating energy?
- ATP-PC
- Anaerobic Glycolysis
- Aerobic
what is the quickest energy system?
immediate energy = ATP-CrP
why is ATP-CrP the immediate energy?
because it is available in the muscle, very close to the site
when would ATP-CrP be used ?
in very short duration times
eg - 100m sprint, high jump
what is glycolysis?
it is an energy system where 6 carbon molecules which then go through the glycolysis and come out as 2 3 carbon packs called pyruvate = 2 ATP produced
How much ATP is produced from glycolysis?
2 ATP
why is Lactate important in glycolysis?
as a result of converting pyruvate into lactate it regenerates NAD
why is Lactate important in glycolysis?
as a result of converting pyruvate into lactate it regenerates NAD which means glycolysis can start again
where does krebs cycle and electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation occur?
in the mitochondria
why is glycolysis and ATP-CrP anaerobic?
because they do not require oxygen
How much ATP does Aerobic Carbohydrate Metabolism make?
32ATP
why is the Aerobic Carbohydrate Metabolism aerobic?
because it uses oxygen
