What is LD?
Neurological condition that interferes with an individual’s ability to store, process or produce information.
Affects basis skills of reading, math, writing.
Higher skills such as attention, abstract reasoning, long/short term memory, organizational, social skills, time planning.

How is it Diagnosed ?
Medical exam
Family history
Psychological and academic testing
A review of child’s performance in school
Response to intervention
Test such as IQ and standardized achievement test (writing, reading, arithmetic).
Etiology of the LD
Associated with development of the fetus and brain.
May occur before, during and after the birth as well as in any stage of life.
Due to injury (traffic accidents and child abuse) and lack of mental support from parents.
Link to genetic.
What are the causes of LD?
The true cause is unknown.
May be due to;
Alcohol consumption and drug use by the mother
Premature birth and low birth weight
Complication during the birthday decreases the oxygen flow to the child brain.
Mother illness during pregnancy
Poor nutrition
Sensory deficits such as hearing loss or poor vision
Exposure to lead in the water or pain
Contact with dangerous materials such as radiation
Neglect and or lack of mental stimulation early in life
