LCT4: Research&Studies Flashcards
Three types of research
1) Descriptive
2) Correlational
3) Experimental
What is a descriptive study?
Goal is to observe and describe - “naturalistic”
What is a correlational study?
Goal is to identify relationships between variables
Correlation does not equal what?
Causation
Third-variable Issue
another variable might be related and be the cause of difference
What is an experimental study?
Goal is to determine causation (test “casual” hypotheses by “manipulating” and “measuring” variables)
What must the data be? (3 things)
- Valid (meaningful)
- Reliable (consistent/stable)
- Accurate
External Validity
the extent to which the study’s findings can be generalized beyond the sample
Internal Validity
the extent to which the data collected address the research hypotheses
Higher internal validity means….
Lower external validity (and vise versa)
Experimenter Expectancy Effect
changes in the behavior of the subject due to observer bias (Researcher: Rosenthal)
Reactivity
knowing they are being observed influences how participants behave
How do you control for bias?
Double-Blind Observation
