Laryngeal Muscles Flashcards
Laryngeal Muscles + Larynx
ALL will have some effect on the larynx
2 classes of Laryngeal Muscles
1) Extrinsic Laryngeal Muscles
2) Intrinsic Laryngeal Muscles
Extrinsic Laryngeal Muscles
One attachment on a laryngeal cartilage and one attachment OUTSIDE of the larynx
Intrinsic Laryngeal Muscles
Contained WITHIN the larynx
BOTH origin AND insertion are on LARYNGEAL CARTILAGES
Extrinsic Laryngeal Muscle FUNCTION
Will elevate (raise) the larynx or depress (lower) the larynx
Will move the larynx as a whole
Work as a group + they all share the same function
REMEMBER:
Elevate = raise = to move upward
Depress = lower = to move downward
Intrinsic Laryngeal Muscle FUNCTION
Act on the vocal folds by:
OPENING/CLOSING
TENSING/RELAXING
Have an effect on the vocal folds + the SHAPE of the glottis
2 Classes of EXTRINSIC laryngeal muscles
1) Suprahyoid (Laryngeal Elevators)
2) Infrahyoid (Laryngeal Depressors)
Suprahyoid (Laryngeal Elevators)
Supra means “above” or “over”
Suprahyoid muscles are attached to the Hyoid Bone AND to a structure that is located ABOVE they hyoid bone
As a group, they will ELEVATE or RAISE the larynx
Infrahyoid (Laryngeal Depressors)
Infra means “below”
Infrahyoid Muscles are attached to the Larynx AND to a structure that is located BELOW the Hyoid Bone
As a group, they will DEPRESS or LOWER the larynx
4 Suprahyoid Muscles (extrinsic)
Dan Sold My Goat
1) Digastric: Anterior + Posterior Bellies
2) Stylohyoid
3) Mylohyoid
4) Geniohyoid
4 INFRAhyoid Muscles (extrinsic)
SOS - T (sung to that Rihanna song “sos please someonehelp me”)
1) Sternohyoid
2) Omohyoid: Anterior and Posterior bellies
3) Sternothyroid
4) Thyrohyoid
INTRINSIC laryngeal Muscles (5)
- Thyroarytenoid: tense, relax, adduct (2 parts)
2.Cricothyroid - Primary regulator of tense (pitch)
- Posterior Cricoarytenoid (PCA) - abduction
- Lateral Cricoarytenoid (LCA) - adduction
- Interarytenoids (IA) - adduct by sliding the arytenoids (2 parts)
Thyroarytenoid muscle (2 parts) (intrinsic)
TENSE, RELAX, ADDUCT
a. thyrovocalis
main mass of the vocal folds
assists in TENSING the vocal folds
b. thyromuscularis
RELAXES
THYROVOCALIS + THYROMUSCULARIS: assist in ADDUCTION
Cricothyroid muscles (intrinsic)
Primary regulator of tense (pitch)
2 parts:
A. PARS OBLIQUE (Lateral) (Angled)
B. PARS RECTA (Anterior) (Straight)
Posterior Cricoarytenoid (PCA) (intrinsic)
Aids in abduction
