Laryngeal Membranes - ligaments, joints, cavities Flashcards

1
Q

Laryngeal Membranes and Ligaments divided into 2 groups

A

1) EXTRINSIC LARYNGEAL MEMBRANES

Connect the LARYNX with the ADJACENT structures for support

2) INTRINSIC LARYNGEAL MEMBRANES

Connect the LARYNGEAL CARTILAGES to each other and regulate movement

Q

Extrinsic Laryngeal Ligaments

A

1) HYOEPIGLOTTIC LIGAMENT

A point of attachment between the hyoid bone and the epiglottis

connects the anterior surface of the epiglottis to the corpus or body of the hyoid bone

2) CRICOTRACHEAL LIGAMENT

A point of attachment between the cricoid cartilage and the first tracheal ring

Q

Extrinsic Laryngeal MEMBRANES

A

1) HYOTHYROID MEMBRANE

Joins the inferior border of the Hyoid Bone and the superior border of the Thyroid Cartilage

2) CRICOTRACHEAL MEMBRANE

Joins the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage and the superior border of the first tracheal ring

Q

What do all intrinsic laryngeal membranes have in common?

A

All of the intrinsic laryngeal membranes arise from ONE broad SHEET of CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Q

Conus Elasticus

A

Most inferior portion of this sheet of tissue

Joins THYROID, ARYTENOID, + CRICOID CARTILAGES

Q

Quadrangular Membrane

A

Most SUPERIOR portion of this sheet of tissue

Joins the EPIGLOTTIS to the ARYTENOID + THYROID CARTILAGES

Q

Vocal Ligament

A

Contained within the vocal folds

Comprised of yellow, elastic tissue

Courses anteriorly, from the angle of the thyroid cartilage, to the vocal process of the arytenoids, posteriorly

Will STIFFEN + SUPPORT the Vocal Folds

Q

Cricoarytenoid Joint

A

Forms the articulation between the cricoid + arytenoid cartilages

Allows the vocal folds to approximate, or make contact, or to come together @midline

Q

Cricothyroid Joint

A

Forms the articulation between the circoid + inferior cornu of the thyroid cartilage

Joint aids in tensing the vocal folds - lengthening of the vocal ligaments

When vocal folds become tense, pitch goes up or increases

15
Q

Aditus Larynges

A

Viewed either as the ENTRANCE to the LARYNX, or as the first space in the larynx

It is a space that is bound anteriorly by the epiglottis, laterally by the aryepiglottic folds, and posteriorlyy by the arytenoid cartilages

16
Q

Pyriform Sinus

A

Small fossae or indentations between the aryepiglottic folds [medially] + the mucous lining of the thyroid cartilage

17
Q

Vallecula

A

Space located between the tongue and the epiglottis

18
Q

Vestibule

A

Space between Aditus Larynges and the ventricular folds (AKA false vocal folds)

It is bound laterally by the aryepiglottic folds, and posteriorly by the arytenoid cartilages

19
Q

Ventricle

A

Ventricle Cavity

space between the true folds and the ventricular folds (i.e. false folds)

20
Q

Glottis

A

Space between the true vocal folds
