Temporal (giant cell) arteritis:
Characteristics
Elderly female
Unilateral HA (temporal artery) jaw claudication
May lead to irreversible blindness due to ophthalmic artery occlusion.
Associated with polymyalgia rheumatica
Temporal (giant cell) arteritis:
Pathology finding
Affects branches of carotid artery
Focal granulomatous inflammation
Increase ESR
Treat with high dose corticosteroid
Takayasu’s arteritis:
Characteristics
Asian female <40 yrs of age
Pulseless disease (weak upper extremity pulse)
Fever, night sweats, arthritis, myalgia, skin nodule, oclar disturbances.
Takayasu’s arteritis:
Pathology finding
Granulomatous thickening of aortic arch, proximal great vessels.
Increase in ESR
Treat with corticosteroid
