Disease of elastic arteries and large and medium sized muscular arteries.

Risk factors
A
Modifiable: smoking, HTN, hyperlipidemia, DM
Non modifiable: gender (men and post menopausal women), and positive fam Hx

Progression
A
Inflammation important in pathogenesis:
1) endothelial cell dysfunction
2) MP and LDL accumulation
3) foam cell formation
4) fatty streaks
5) SMC migration via PDGF and FDF and proliferation, extracellular matrix deposition
6) fibrous plaque and complex atheromas

Complications
A
Aneurysms, Ischemia, Infarcts, PVD, thromboemboli

Location
A
Abdominal aorta > coronary artery > popliteal artery > carotid artery

Symptoms
A
Angina, claudication, but can be asymptomatic
