1
Q
Definition
A
Beta blockers:
metoprolol, propranolol, esmolol, atenolol, timolol
2
Q
MOA
A
Decreases SA and AV nodal activity by
lowering cAMP, Ca2+ current
Suppresses abn pacemamkers by decreasing slope of phase 4.
AV node particularly sensitive: increase PR interval.
Esmolol very short acting
3
Q
Use
A
Ventricular tachycardia,
SVT
Slowing ventricular rate during Afib and Aflutter
4
Q
Toxicity
A
Impotence, Asthma exacerbation CV(bradycardia, AV block, CHF) CNS effects (sedation, sleep alteration) Many mask the signs of hypoglycemia
Metoprolol can cause dyslipidemia
Propranolol can exacerbate vasospam in Prinzmetal’s
Treat overdose with glucagon.
