language development 2 Flashcards
what is grammar
What are the two components of gramma
grammar enables us to combine words in ways to convey meaning
Syntax and morphology
what is syntax
the branch of grammar dealing with the organisation of words into large structures
how to test syntactic development
Weefing experiment
- ask child to point to where the lion weefed the dog
what is morphology
the analysis of word structue
how to test morphology
the wug test
before children discover an inflection they make
errors of omission
after children discover an inflection they make
overgeneralisations
what kind of approach to language does chomsky have
a nativist approach
why does chomsky believe children cant learn from what they hear
. poverty of stimulus
. no negative problem
What did chomsky suggest to be an innate set of rules children have
universal grammar. Grammatical categories which are used to generate structures.
what are the limitations of universal gramma
- no amount of innate knowledge makes up UG
2. how do children use it to learn their specific language
what is the opposite of a nativist approach
a constructivist apprach
- suggest grammar is learnable
what do constructivist approaches focus on
- social context
- learning mechanism- intention reading, imitation, statistical learning, generalization, analogy making
what are pragmatics
the ability to adapt language to the social context
what does pragmatic development include
- turn taking
- right expressions to refer to something
- understanding implicatures (some doesnt mean all)
- talking in different registers
- narrative skills (talking about things which arent there)
