Labetalol Action
A
- Selective Alpha 1-adrenergic blockade
- Non-selective beta-adrenergic blockade
- Reduction of BP w/o reflex tachycardia or bradycardia

Labetalol Indications
A
- BP management in ischemic strokes that received tPA. Goal SBP<180 and/or DBP<105
- BP management in patients with confirmed intracranial hemorrhage. Goal SBP<160 and/or DBP<90

Labetalol Contraindications
A
- Bronchial asthma (relative)
- Overt Cardiac Failure
- High degree heart blocks(>than 1st degree)
- Cardiogenic shock
- Severe Bradycardia

Labetalol Dosage
A
- IV/IO: 10-20mg MAX single dose 20mg. Repeat in 10 min PRN. MAX total dose 50mg.
- Continuous infusion: 2-8mg/min. Increase by 2mg/min q 10 min. MAX 8mg/min

Labetalol Onset/Duration
A
- Onset: 2-3 min, peak effect @ 15min.
* Duration: 2 hrs

Labetalol Side Effects
A
- CNS- dizziness, tingling scalp/skin, numbness, vertigo.
- Respiratory- wheezing and bronchospasm.
- Cardiac- hypotension, Ventricular dysrhythmias, syncope, bradycardia, and heart block.
- Other- N/V.

Labetalol Interactions
A
Additive cardiac depression and toxicity when used concomitantly with lidocaine or CCB.
