Lab 3 Flashcards
Blood moves fastest in which vessels?
Why?
Arteries
Thicker wall and smaller diameter- closer to heart
What vessels does the blood move the slowest?
Why?
Capillaries
Thinner wall - small diameter
more surface area / allows for time for diffusion
Which vessel converges and which diverges?
Arteries - diverge - branch out
Veins - converge - come together
Plethysmograph
Instrument used to measure the changes in the size of organs or the amount of blood flowing through it
Volume pulse
Change in blood volume with each cardiac cycle
Reflects blood flow in peripheral circulation
During each systole volume in finger increases during diastole volume decreases
Amplitude
Height of volume pulse recording
What causes the dicrotic notch?
Elastic recoil of arterial wall after closure of aortic valve
What happens to volume pulse when you dip your finger in cold water?
It decreases - bc vessels vasoconstrict
What happens to the volume pulse when you dip your finger in warm/hot water?
It increases- bc it vasodilates
What happens to the amplitude when you excersice?
Amplitide increases on the body part thats being excersiced
Where do we take a pulse?
Radial artery - arm Carotid artery - side of neck Temporal artery - temple Brachial artery - inner side of biceps Popliteal artery - behind knee
What is an instrument used to measure peripheral blood pressure called?
Sphygmomanometer
Systolic pressure
Peak during ventricular systole
Diastolic pressure
Min pressure during ventricular diastole
Pulse pressure
Difference between systolic and diastolic pressure
What unit comes after a pressure reading?
MmHg
Define amplitude
The height of volume pulse recording
Define diastolic pressure
Minimum measured pressure during ventricular diastole
Which human blood vessels converge?
Veins
What is the device used to take human bp?
Sphygmomanometer
List any 2 arteries used to take pulse
Carotid
Temporal
Brachial
Popliteal
Define pulse pressure
