16
Q

What happens in the bell stage?

A

There is a defined tooth shape

17
Q

When does the permanent tooth germ develop?

A

16 weeks

18
Q

When is the late bell stage?

A

18 weeks

19
Q

What happens in the late bell stage?

A

dentine and enamel formation

20
Q

What is unmineralised dentine called?

A

Predentine

21
Q

What is mineralised dentine called?

A

Hydroxyapatite

22
Q

Describe the 2 stages of enamel formation.

A
  1. Partially mineralised protein matrix is deposited

2. Organic part is removed and mineralisation is completed (maturation).

23
Q

Name the 3 stages of amelogenesis.

A
  1. Differentiation
  2. Secretion
  3. Maturation.
24
Q

What happens in the differentiation stage of amelogenesis?

A

ameloblasts elongate, becoming columnar.

The nucleus migrates to the basal end of the cell.

25
Q

What happens in the secretion stage of amelogenesis?

A

Cells become secretory cells. They synthesis and secrete enamel matrix proteins.

26
Q

What is another name for enamel matrix proteins?

A

amelogenins

27
Q

What happens in the maturation stage of amelogenesis?

A

Most matrix proteins are removed.

Mineral content is increased to 95%.

28
Q

Describe the process of root formation.

A

The enamel organ maps out the shape of the crown.
External and internal enamel epithelium meet at the cervical loop.
Apical growth of the cervical loop defines the root shape called Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath, made of 2 layers.

29
Q

What surrounds the dental papilla?

A

Enamel organ

30
Q

What surrounds the enamel organ?

A

Dental follicle.

31
Q

What does supernumerary mean?

A

Extra teeth

32
Q

What does fusion mean?

A

2 teeth fused together

33
Q

What does hypodontia mean?

A

missing/underdeveloped teeth

34
Q

What does gemination mean?

A

2 teeth develop from 1

35
Q

What does dentinogenesis imperfecta mean?

A

dentine dysplasia
