L16. Skin and Mucous Membranes Flashcards
Name the 3 layers found in skin
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Subcutaneous layer
Discuss a feature of the epidermis in skin.
Stratified squamous epithelium with no blood vessels.
Name the 5 stratum layers in skin.
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum basale
(Can Lucy’s Gran’s SKIN Bend?)
What is present in the stratum corneum?
Keratinised dead cells and these are shed regularly.
In which cases is the stratum lucidum present?
Only in thick skin, eg hands and feet as a thin layer of dead cells.
What is present in the stratum granulosum?
waterproof cell layer with keratinocytes.
What is present in the stratum spinosum?
Keratinocytes
What is present in the stratum basale?
Sensory receptors and melanocytes.
Name the 2 layers found in the dermis.
Papillary layer
Reticular layer
What is present in the dermis’ papillary layer?
Capillaries and nerve endings
What is present in the dermis’ reticular layer?
Dense connective tissue
Describe the dermis layer in skin.
A thick layer forming “true skin” with blood capillaries and nerve endings, collagen and elastic fibres.
What causes acne?
Bacteria build-up under the skin
What does psoriasis show as on skin?
Inflamed and flaking skin
What causes pemphigus?
Healthy skin being attacked, forming watery blisters
