L34. Nervous System Overview Flashcards
Name the 2 types of nervous system cells.
Neurons (nerve cells)
Glia (glial cells)
Give a comparison between glia and neurons.
Glia are more numerous than neurons.
What do glia do?
Form myelin
What do Schwann calls and oligodendrocytes do?
Schwann cells myelinate axons in the peripheral nervous system.
Oligodendrocytes myelinate axons in the CNS.
What are astrocytes involved in?
CNS neuron nutrient supply.
What are microglia involved in?
Defence role, phagocytic.
What are ependymal cells involved in?
production of cerebrospinal fluid.
What components make up the PNS?
Spinal nerves, cranial nerves.
Name the pairs of spinal nerves.
31 pairs : 8 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral 1 coccygeal
What is a myotome?
The group of muscle a spinal nerve innervates (motor)
What is a dermatome?
The area of skin a nerve innervates (sensory)
Describe 2 types of peripheral nerves and what they do.
Afferent (sensory) - carries info to CNS
Efferent (motor) - carries info away from CNS. Causes muscle contractions.
What is the difference between somatic and visceral efferents?
Somatic efferents - voluntary muscle
Visceral efferents - autonomic nervous system.
Name the 5 layers from outermost to innermost of a peripheral nerve.
