L37. Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Name the 2 sub-topics of the autonomic nervous system.
Parasympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic nervous system
What type of muscle is smooth muscle and cardiac muscle?
Involuntary
Give 2 features of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Long pre-ganglionic neuron
Short post-ganglionic neuron
Give 3 parasympathetic roles/associations.
Salivary gland
heart
digestion
Which cranial nerves is the parasympathetic nervous system associated with?
Cranial nerves 3,7,9,10
Sacral 2-4
Describe the length of sympathetic neurons.
Pre and post ganglionic neurons are similar in length.
Describe the 2 roles of sympathetic neurons.
homeostasis ; blood pressure, thermoregulation
fight or flight
Which spinal nerves is the sympathetic nervous system associated with?
T1-L2
Which are the breathing muscle?
skeletal muscles
Which nerves control breathing?
Somatic nerves, eg phrenic nerve
What are the effects of noradrenaline?
Vasoconstriction (alpha receptor) and bronchodilation (beta receptor)
What happens when noradrenaline meets beta-1 receptors?
increases heart rate.
What do beta blockers do?
Block beta-1 receptors
What does adrenaline do in the body?
It is a vasoconstrictor
Give a difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
Often have opposing effects (except in genitalia)
