Name the 4 layers of oral epithelium.
Stratum : germinativum spinosum granulosum corneum
Describe the histological difference between keratinised and non-keratinised epithelium.
Keratinised has a thick upper layer (pink) which non-keratinised does not have.
What are melanocytes involved in?
Pigment
What are merkel cells associated with?
mechanoreceptor neurons
What are Langerhans cells described as?
Dendritic cells - antigen presenting.
Name and give the location of the 4 tongue papillae types.
Filiform and fungiform (deeper) are present on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue.
Circumvallate papillae present in a “V” at the back of the tongue.
Foliate papillae along tongue’s lateral border.
