L4 - Anxiety Flashcards
What is the modal model of emotion (Gross and Thompson, 2007)
See image but
Situation - attention - appraisal - response
Competitive stressors). < - (Competitive strains
What are the possible competitive stressors?
Physical preparation, team atmosphere, relationships with sig. others, opposition, nature of the event, pressures and expectations
What is competitive strain?
An individuals negative response to competitive stressors
Mental (cog anx) -> worries and concerns, negative thoughts
Physical (som anx) -> jittery/ nervous, tension
Behavioural -> rushing, poor coordination
Increases in competitive anxiety can increase performance up to a point. What does Hardy and Fazey’s catastrophe model demonstrate?
The association between anxiety and performance
What does Jones (1995) control model of facilitative and debiltative anxiety show ?
Individual differences (trait anxiety, self-esteem etc) plays a role on the connection between stressor and control.
Control can go to yes (facilitative) where positive expectancies of ability to cope and goal attainment occurs
Control can also go to no (debilitative) where negative expectancies of ability to cope and goal attainment occurs
Identify some individual difference factors (personal factors)?
- Trait anxiety
- cognitive bias
- positive vs negative affect
- self-confidence
- coping strategies
- mental skills
Identify some individual difference factors (situational factors)??
- skill level
- competitive experience
- sport type
- performance level
- team cohesion
- locus of control
Discuss the advances made to Gross and Thompson’s (2007) model
- Situation selection added
- situation modification added to situation
- attentional deployment added to attention
- cognitive change added to appraisal
- response modulation added to response
Response goes to situation
What were the implications of Martinent et al’s study?
- help athletes to develop a range of emotional regulation strategies (across the 5 types)
- choose strategies according to the characteristics of the situation
- emotion regulation strategies need to be practiced to quickly initiate them under pressure of competition and without a great deal of thought
