L10 - Why we do/don't exercise Flashcards
What are the key terms of why do/don’t exercise? (Biddle and Mutrie, 2008)
- physical activity - movement of the body, results in energy expenditure and increased physical fitness
- active living - a lifestyle choice, integrate physical activity into everyday routines
- exercise - planned, structure and repetitive bodily movements where objective is to maintain physical fitness
- sport - rule governed, structured, competitive involving gross motor movements
Most of us are not active enough to get the full benefits of PA, what did WHO state on the matter?
31% of adults worldwide are insufficiently active, 3.2 million deaths per year are due to insufficient PA, it’s the 4th leading risk factor for global mortality
What are the 4 environments required to understand physical activity (Biddle et al, 2008)
Policy, Environment, interpersonal, individual
What are the 5 components of Bauman et al’s (2012) adapted ecological model of the determinants of PA?
Individual - interpersonal - environment - regional/national policy - global
Gets more relevant to older individuals as move along ->
Discuss the ‘individual’ component of Bauman’s model (2012)
A biopsychosocial interaction exists between individual factors
Psychosocial factors (demographics, attitudes, self-efficacy) biological factors (e.g. Genetics, evolutionary, physiology)
Discuss the ‘interpersonal’ component of Bauman’s (2012) model?
- social support from those around us is a consistent interpersonal factor
- “aid and assistance exchanged through social relationships and interpersonal transactions”
- Wills and shiner (2002) stated 5 key interpersonal components
What are the 5 key interpersonal components (Wills and Shiner, 2002)
- instrumental support - tangible and practical assistance
- emotional support - expression of encouragement, empathy, caring
- validation - comparing one self with others to gauge progress and confirm one’s thoughts, feelings and experiences are normal
- informational support - giving directions, advice or suggestions about how to exercise
- companionship support - availability of people to exercise with
Discuss the ‘environment’ component of Bauman’s (2012) model?
- our built environment can help/hinder active lifestyles
- for all round health benefits: exercising outdoors > exercising indoors
- “green exercise” increases PA levels with lower levels of perceived exertion, increases stress reduction, mood and self esteem and perceived health (Gladwell et al, 2013)
Discuss the “policy” component of Bauman’s model (2012)?

Strategy, policy and commissioning for PA -> local or national
National -> national campaign for children/young people, physically active travel, exercise referral schemes
