Why is the coach-athlete relationship important?
- a fundamental process of coaching and instrumental for athletes development, but can also be a source of stress and distraction (e.g. 1996 games led to frustration )

Discuss transformational leadership and coaching (Bass and Riggio, 2006)
- idealised influence - leaders behave as role models and gain their followers trust and respect
- inspirational motivation - leaders hold high expectation and communicate a compelling vision of the future
- intellectual stimulation - leaders encourage their followers to consider different perspectives and empower them to contribute novel ideas
- individualised consideration - leaders display genuine care and concern for their followers by recognising their individual needs
Describe some limitations to the leadership approach?
Coaches behaviours do not accurately reflect what goes on within and between coaches and their athletes
What is the definition of relationship perspective (Jowett and Ntoumanis, 2004)
“… the situation in which coaches and athletes emotions, thought and behaviour are mutually and causally inter connected”
What is the 3C and 1C conceptualisation of the coach-athlete relationship??

Discuss the C - closeness ?
- feelings experienced and perceived by the coach and the athlete in the relationship
- a function of interpersonal issues such as liking, trust and respect - associated witch successful/positive coaching
Discuss the C - commitment ?
- a coaches or athletes intention to stay attracted to one another whilst maintaining the relationship over time
- a lack of commitment reveals itself in : criticism and negative feedback, lack of common goals, communication problem, lack of emotional and informational support
Discuss the C - complementarity?
- reflects an environment in which both the coach and athlete work together to improve performance
- leads to superior performance and a more harmonious and satisfying relationship
- noncomplimentarity can lead to : - excessive obedience and discipline, power struggles
Discuss the C - co-orientation??
- coaches and athletes interperceptions (how they perceive each other)
