L19 muscles of the neck Flashcards
What does deep mean in terms of muscle layers?
- deep usually means very small and that the primary function is to support the head on neck - to stabilise rather than produce large movements
what does the superficial layer mean in relation to muscle layers?
- larger muscle for large movements
- muscles are close to the skin
what is the origin of the muscle?
- the stable part of the muscle eg the cervical spine & cranium base
what is the insertion of a muscle?
the part of the muscle in which contraction / movement takes place
what are the main movements of the spine?
- extension
- forward flexion
- lateral flexion
- rotation
what does unilateral movement mean?
1 muscle belly is moving
what does bilateral movement mean?
2 muscle bellies are moving
what 2 thing does the movement of a muscle in the head and neck depend on?
- their location on the spine - in relation to axis of rotation &
- the muscle fibre direction
what is ipsilateral rotation?
muscle that rotates body to the same side - eg muscle on left turns body to the left
what is contralateral rotation?
muscle rotates body to the opposite side - eg muscle on left turns body to right
if the contraction of the muscle is unilateral (1 muscle belly), what is the only movement that can occur?
rotation or lateral flexion
if contraction is bilateral, what type of movement can only occur?
only extension or forward flexion
what are the 3 attachments of the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
- sternal (manubrium)
- cleido - clavicle
- mastoid - mastoid process of temporal bone
what are the 3 main types if actions of the SCM muscle?
- cervical neck flexion - ie forward flexion of head and neck - bilateral contraction (both sides)
- **contralateral rotation **- rotate to opposite side - eg left SCM contracts and rotates head to the right
- ipsilateral flexion - lateral flexion to the same side- eg the contraction of the left SCM laterally flexes head & neck to the left
what are the anterior muscles of the neck?
- superficial - SCM
- supra hyoid muscles - MGSD
- scalene muscle - anterior, middle & posterior
- longus capitis muscle
- longus colli
- rectus capitis
