Kungliga Slottet + The Vasa M Flashcards
Take a look straight ahead… (Kungliga slottet)
Take a look straight ahead. (här ser man inte alltid slottet så då får du förklara att dom strax kommer se det till höger, eller att vi kommer åka förbi det senare). The Royal Palace of Stockholm. One of the biggest in Europe. Holds 7 floors. 42 000 square meters divided into 608 rooms. You know what this meant when it was finished? That we´ve got one more room than Buckingham Palace. Coincidence – I think not.
Om du hinner; The current palace was finished in 1778 after our old castle Tre Kronor, the three crowns burned down in a catastrophic fire 1697. So we had to build a new one. Took almost 80 years to finish because Sweden was involved in all sorts of wars back then.
And speaking about war..
Friends- the red building…
Friends - the red building with the masts is the Vasa Museum. The most known tourist attraction in Sweden after Ocean Bus.
The mast in the middle has the same height as the original – 52 meters. And now you can imagine how big she was, and that’s exactly why she sank. She was too big, too high and too narrow - exactly like the bus you’re sitting in right now.
The year was 1628 and she started from the castle. She went that way (peka) on her way to Poland. She made it just around the bend by the amusement park before she sank on her maiden voyage. Sweden’s first submarine.
She remained…
She remained on the bottom of the sea for over 300 years - until Anders Franzén was able to find her in the mid 1900 hundreds so that we today can take a look at the only existing ship in the world from the 16 hundreds. There is no other.
The beautiful island…
The beautiful island is Kastellholmen. Second smallest in the city.
See the flag flying on top. Important flag. Anyone know what that particular flag symbolizes? That Sweden is not invaded by a foreign power. We call it the peace flag. It has been flying there every morning for over 200 years. Except one morning! 17th of May 1996 when we found…. the Norwegian flag up there. People started to call the police, military, newspapers… Have we been invaded by Norway all of a sudden? No. It turned out that a couple of Norwegian students had sneaked in and brought our Swedish flag down and raised their own Norwegian one just to have a little bit of fun with their big brother neighbor.
Den 17 maj 1996 vaknade man alltså här på söders höjder och trodde man blivit norrbagge över en natt. Tuff morgon
