KOTTER AND SCHLESINGERS’S BARRIERS TO CHANGE Flashcards
What are barriers to change
Barriers to change are the resisting forces that could make change more difficult to implement.
What are the 4 main forces of resistance within an organisation
Different assessment of the situations - For example: Managers saying that we need to go ahead with this change, but employees having the same information but they are interpreting it differently to the way you are
Misunderstanding or lack of trust (with what managers do with that information)
Low tolerance for change - Maybe employees don’t like change, or don’t want to change anything about themselves etc
Parochial interest - The employee only thinking of what’s best for them
What are the effects of Parochial interest
Maybe losing something of value (like status or pay)
Could involve changes to working practices perceived as negative
Placing own interest above that of the business
What are some effects of resistance to change/ inertia
Fear of the change
Unwilling to adapt or undertake training
Concerned for others in the workforce
What are the effects of Misunderstanding or lack of trust:
Information failure
Lack of communication
What are the effects of Different assessment of the situation (different interpretations):
Employees see more costs than benefits
Managers see more benefits than costs
What are the other barriers to change
Stakeholders: Employees. Shareholders, customers (might not be for the change)
Lack of finance
Lack of information
Competition (maybe a competitor has already made that change, and if you make that change also, you might not be differentiated)
Time constraints
Legal restriction (potentially obstructing the change)
