Preconventional
Age: 3-6 yrs old (Preschool)
Children only interested in securing their own benefit. Morality is based on something being either good or bad. They want to avoid punishment and quickly learn they may secure other benefits by pleasing others.
Conventional
Age: 7-11 yrs old (Mid Childhood)
Morality is seen as following the rules of society and authority; trying to be “good” and follow the rules; law and order orientation
Postconventional
Age: 12-18 yrs old (Adolescence)
Children learn that there is a difference between what is right and wrong from a moral perspective, and what is right and wrong according to the rules; although these often overlap, sometimes breaking a rule is the right thing to do.
