Oral Stage

A

Age: Birth- 2 yrs (Infancy)
Libido (pleasure) is obtained from the mouth, tongue, and gums. Baby gets pleasure from putting things in its mouth (sucking, biting, and breastfeeding)
Oral stimulation could lead to oral fixation later in life. Oral personalities engage in oral behaviors (smokers, nail-biters, finger-chewers) usually under stress.

Anal Stage

A

Age: 1.5-3 yrs (Toddler)
Libido (pleasure) is obtained from anus. Toilet training is the most important activity and the child gets pleasure from defacating, but now they are being told when and where to poop. This firth conflict with authority can determine the child’s future relationship with authority and part of their personality. (anal retentive= obessively tidy & respectful of authority; anal explusive= messy, rebellious)

Phallic Stage

A

Age: 3-6 yrs old (Preschool)
Genitals become a new source of pleasure. Pleasure is derived from genital stimulation (masturbation). Children become aware of the anatomical differents which sets in motion conflict between erotic attraction, resentment, jealously, and fear which was Oedipus complex (boys) and Electra complex (girls)

Latency Stage

A

Age: 7-11 yrs (Middle Childhood)
Interlude where no psychosexual development takes place. Libido is dormant; sexual energy is put towards psychic energy towards school work, hobbies, activities, etc.

Genital Stage

A

Age: Primarily 12-18 but also throughout adulthood 18-40
Genitals are the focus of pleasure; young person seeks sexual stimulation and satisfaction in “hetero” relationships; also settle down in a relationship
