how is a weft knit made?
a single yarn travels the width of the fabric- each row of loops links with the previous row of loops in the fabric
what are the properties of a weft knit?
-The simplest knit
-can be produced by either hand or machine knitting
-very stretchy
-distorts easily when washed
-drapes softly and is figure hugging
-does not crease easily
-fabric traps air- makes it a very good insulator
-snags, ladders and unravels easily
-has a definite right and wrong side
what are the typical uses of weft knit?
range of garments and socks
what are some example fabrics which are made using a weft knit?
-single jersey (plain knit)
-double jersey
-silver knits
-jacquard knits
-polartec fleece
what is the key difference between a single jersey and a double jersey?
a single jersey has a definite right and wrong side- the right side should have v shaped knits which are visible. a double jersey knit has no definite right and wrong side and both sides look identical
what is polartec fleece?
a brushed weft-knitted fabric with an extra yarn knitted in to trap air and give a soft, dense nap
how is a warp knit made?
individual yarns are interlocked sideways along the length of the fabric
what are the properties of warp knit yarns?
-more complex structure
-less stretchy- gives a firmer fabric
-does not ladder or unravel so can be cut and sewn more easily
-faster than weft knitting
-can be made using a machine only
-cheapest and fastest method of fabric production using yarns
-wider variety of knits can be produced
what are rib knits?
a type of weft knit which is used for cuffs and sweater hems
what are the uses of warp knit?
can be used in:
-blouses
-lingerie
-gloves
-underwear
-lace trimmings and fabric
how can machine knitting be done?
on a flat or circular industrial knitting machine. Flatbed machines have a row of needles that produce a width of fabric.

what is panel /cut-to-sew knitting?
-where individual, flat rectangular panels including a finished-off-edge for the cuff or waistband are knitted. The garments are then cut to shape and assembled
what are fully fashioned panels?
Fashioning is the knitting of garment parts to their exact shapes by increasing and decreasing stitches directly on the machine or by hand knitting.
They are shaped so that they can be sewn directly into garments without cutting. Welts, neckbands and pockets are knitted integrally.
How is polyester fleece made?
polyester fleece is made when a napper machine raises the pile yarn to give a brushed/raised fibre and surface of the fabric
