1.1- material physical properties Flashcards
tensile strength:
the ability to resist breaking under tension
abrasion resistance:
the ability to resist surface wear and tear caused by friction or touching another material
elasticity/ crease resistance:
the ability to be deformed and then go back to it’s original shape when the force is removed
absorbency:
the ability to absorb liquids
easy care:
the ability to maintain optimum appearance no matter what happens to it- e.g several washes
colour fastness:
the ability to retain dye during the manufacturing process. when washed or exposed to sunlight
electrostatic charge:
the ability for static electricity to develop in fibres under very dry conditions
corrosive solvent resistance:
the ability to withstand attack and decay from substances such as chlorine and bleach
micro-organism and insect resistance:
the ability to withstand attack and decay from insects such as moths and micro-organisms such as bacteria
flammability:
the ability to burn or ignite, causing fire or combustion
thermoplasticity:
the ability to become mouldable/flexible when heated, enabling textures and creases to be set and retained once cool.
formability:
the ability to manipulate and deform fabrics without damaging them
what does ‘handle’ evaluate?
how the fabric behaves, performs or feels when it is touched
what is drape?
the way in which the fabric hangs
what is lustre?
the material’s ability to reflect light from it’s surface so that it appears shiny
